Eris

Eris’ name comes from Greek mythology. She’s the goddess of chaos, discord and strife. This is somewhat ironic as in this book, Eris is obsessed with being normal. This made more sense in earlier drafts and maybe will again, depending on where the story goes.

Eris’ drawings of string theory come from a book I read called The Trouble with Physics by Lee Smolin, during my quantum physics phase.

dark lines dancing across his skin, looped and dotted round his eyes like Eris’ drawing of twenty six dimensional space: snakes swallowing snakes swallowing galaxies.

It’s also described as looking like ‘knitting’. This is from an article I read about a model of hyperbolic space which was too complex to create physically, until a Cornell University mathematician, Daina Taimina figured out how: she crocheted it.
